Chronology

May 1997                                   Noticias LatinAmerican Chess Tournament.  Several firms from the Latin Community in London take part as funds contributors.  The first rounds  are simultaneously played between two different places such as the restaurant ‘El Rincon Quiteño’ located in Holloway Rd, N7 and the restaurant ‘La Piragua’ located in Upper St, N1.

September 1997 - April 1998      The already founded ‘Capablanca Chess Club’ signs to play within the London Chess League starting from the last Division (6th) and at its first try succeeds in getting Promotion and  in going up one more division (5th). Restaurant ‘El Rancho’ is the place chosen for tournament matches and championship matches from there on.

August 1998                                Another LatinAmerican Tournament takes place at night club ‘Bar Latino’ (it does not exist now) located in Islington and with the financial backing again of some firms from the Latin Community gets ahead. A Swiss System to 5 rounds is decided.  A Venezuelan newcomer named Giancarlo won it followed by Colombians Alberto and Diego.

September 1998 - April 1999      Capablanca Chess Club finished a modest 7th place out of 12 teams within the 5th Division of the London Chess League.

October 1999                             ‘La Piragua’ Tournament is played at Bar ‘Lord Palmerston’, N7 under the backing of a Bolivian manager Mr. William.

September1999 - April 2000       Capablanca Chess Club wins its outright Promotion from the 5th Division into the 4th Division of the London Chess League.

September 2000 - April 2001      The club fights vigorously to avoid being kicked out and demoted from the 4th Division of the London Chess League.

September 2001 - April 2002      The club this time counter-fights better than last time obtaining a meritorious 3rd place from the 4th Division, just a place away from being promoted into the 3rd Division!

May 2002                                   Capablanca Tournament took place at San Marino Rrestaurant and saw the assistence of 22 players including 4 under-age.  It was decided on the swiss System made up of 7 rounds and throwing 6 finalists (Alberto Rojas, Graham Hughes,Jert Velasco, Pedro Garcia, Adrian Gaitan and Dionisio Polanco).  The finals took place at La piragua Restaurant in a one versus each one on a 20 min a game.  Alberto losing unexpectingly the last game drew on point with the next two followers Pedro and Graham who shared the money prize.  After sorting out the final order was Alberto, Pedro, Graham, Jet, Adrian, Dionisio.  It was there where it was suggested that the club rep (Alvara Arteaga) should get an increase in his wages when in fact it was meant his paperwork.

September 2002 - April 2003      The club now under a new arrangement of divisions into four by the London Chess League from which again departs gets a 4th place (4th Division).

September 2003 - April 2004      The club now gets a 3rd place within the 4th Division of the London Chess League once again cherishing the possibility of entering the 3rd Division!

September 2004 - April 2005      The club gets finally the long awaited Promotion from 4th Division into the 3rd Division of the London Chess League by gaining a 2nd place tied on points with the 1st and 3rd teams and only ½ point away from the 4th one!! Sadly this could have well been 1st for us if it was not for our high number in absenteeism therefore we were deducted half point as a penalty.

September 2005 - April 2006      The club does well to stay within the 3rd Division of the London Chess League by gaining a 7th place out of 12 teams.  The team now is more ethnically mixed-up than ever before by recruiting players from other nationalities rather than ‘Latinos’.

August 2006                                La Piraqgua Tournament was made as a test of strength amongst new members of the team that as expected did well on exception of two of them (M Chamberlain and R Robinson).  The winner was Polish Peter Marcinkiewicz followed by Venezuelan  Pedro Longart and Colombian Alberto Rojas.
